Velo-city Global 2016 – Evolution of Cycling

The Velo-city Global conference 2016 in Taipei tells the remarkable story of how collaboration between industry, civil society and administration can shape a cycling city. The programme of Velo-city Global 2016 Taipei, launched by a bicycle tour with over 2000 participants led by Taipei’s Mayor, will bring together all aspects of cycling right before Taipei Cycle Show 2016.

Since about two years Kerstin Oschabnig has been coordinating the Bike Citizens Magazine. For her, the bicycle embodies more than just a means of transportation – it's a lifestyle. She loves all the facets of bicycle culture and sometimes stares a few seconds too long towards a passing bicycle. In her free time you find her on stage as a circus artist.

“We have the ambition to become a cycling city. The city of Taipei is proud to host Velo-city Global and showcase the big success of Ubike bicycle rental system, new investments in infrastructure and, of course, the vibrant bicycle industry which supports our efforts” said Taipei’s Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, Ms. Chung Hui-Yu.

“ECF had at least these three very good reasons to bring the Velo-city Global to Taipei: the link to the Taipei Cycle Show, the ambition of Taipei City and the leadership of the city government and the bicycle industry here”, said Bernhard Ensink, Secretary General of the European Cyclists’ Federation.

East and west cycling expertise meet at Velo-city Taipei Global 2016

The motto of the conference is “Evolution of cycling” and it approaches five different aspects: urban transition, moving lifestyle, sustainable economy, sharing societies and design in motion.The programme of Velo-city will provoke a unique exchange between eastern and western expertise with rich plenary sessions featuring mayors from all over the world, famous architects, important politicians from the region and the CEO of the Taipei design capital 2016. On top of that there will be have sub plenaries on health, bike sharing systems and bike tourism.

Apart from the plenaries, the programme is composed by 28 parallel sessions covering all the aspects of cycling. The last two days of the conference – right before the Taipei Cycle Show – will be focused on the role of the industry on the development of cycling, with key note speakers such as Tony Lo, CEO of Giant and John Burke, CEO of Trek. One of the highlights of the conference will be the design exhibition and the winner of the design prize.
