Quiz: Can you guess the city by its bicycle infrastructure?

How good or well connected is the bicycle infrastructure of the most bicycle friendly cities? Find out yourself and see if you can guess the city name by its bicycle infrastructure.

Kerstin Oschabnig
Since about two years Kerstin Oschabnig has been coordinating the Bike Citizens Magazine. For her, the bicycle embodies more than just a means of transportation – it's a lifestyle. She loves all the facets of bicycle culture and sometimes stares a few seconds too long towards a passing bicycle. In her free time you find her on stage as a circus artist.

For the quiz we chose the top 20 cities which were rated to be the most bicycle friendly cities in the Copenhagenize Index 2017: Copenhagen, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Malmö, Bordeaux, Antwerp, Ljubljana, Tokyo, Berlin, Barcelona, Vienna, Paris, Seville, Munich, Nantes, Hamburg, Helsinki, Oslo and Montreal. Not surprisingly this list includes big capitals, but also small European cities. This mix makes the quiz even more interesting and challenging. Bicycle infrastructure is only one criteria for the rating towards the most bicycle-friendly city, so don’t let yourself be disguised by the relation between the size of the city and its amount of designated cycle lanes.

Explanation

The graphics show the cycle network of each city. Blue symbolizes separated streets or streets designated to people cycling. All streets in grey are non separated bike lanes along of one- or two-way roads. Depending on the size of the city the map scale was adjusted to fit the layout. Every map was created using OpenStreetMap data. Bike data can be anaylsed and visualised with Bike Citizens Analytics.

If you cannot get enough from this quiz, there is one more you can take. We made a similar quiz last year with the Guardian.
