Copenhagen – Hometown of More Bikes than People
As you may already know, Copenhagen is said to be heaven on earth for anyone with a passion for cycling. This Danish city is the only one in the world where there are actually more bikes than people, with 650,000 bikes to 520,000 humans!
Step-By-Step Towards a Bike City
Whilst other cities are still gearing up to making themselves more bicycle-friendly, Copenhagen has definitely gone the extra mile. In this city, cars are few and far between. While this may be hard for you to wrap your head around (the chances are that you are living in a city where there is no such thing as silence), it is completely true!
In fact, the residents of this city collectively cycle over a million kilometres every year. That is equal to cycling all the way around the world 1,000 times. In addition to being cheap and efficient, bicycles have reduced the amount of pollution both by noise and atmosphere by a huge amount in Copenhagen as opposed to the rest of the world.
With 5 times as many bikes as there are cars, it is a small wonder indeed that people in the city are, on average, far happier than people living at other places. They are healthier, fitter and far more active. To understand how Copenhagen became such a cyclist friendly city, check out this infographic we did at Icebike.org:
